The City May Not Sleep...but I'm sure tired!

I'm still recovering from our weekend in Manhattan!

It started with an early morning trek to the train station at BWI. Within about 35 minutes, we were on the train that was heading north to NY. I was awake for the first couple of stops, but I was out cold when we stopped in Wilmington and I just barely woke up when we first arrived in Philly.

Once you stop in Newark, you know how close you are, so everyone is looking out the windows or gathering up their things. Dave was excited to see the city in the distance.

The first thing we did upon emerging from Penn Station was grab a cab to Dave's company's office. Not too far (about twenty blocks or so), but Dave and I aren't accustomed to NYC cabbie driving, so we were cracking up the whole time. I had forgotten how funny it is to fly twenty blocks, with intermittent sudden stops and terrified pedestrians. All I could think of was the movie Elf, "The yellow ones don't stop!"

The folks at the office were very hospitable and kind. They showed us around the NY office and got us set up with the keys to the corporate apartment for the weekend.

When we got to the apartment, we could not get in. The keys were turning but the door was not opening. Apparently, we are too stupid to unlock doors. Yeah, that's right. It took the two of us and a phone call to find out what the "trick" was, in order to get in. We were very proud of ourselves.

The corporate apartment was quite enjoyable actually. A split-level studio with some cool exposed brick and large, dark, wooden beams.

We had a great first day, walking the neighborhood, grabbing lunch (pizza) nearby, and walking downtown. That night, I brought Dave over to my old neighborhood (the Upper West Side) and I have to admit that the nostalgia bug bit me hard. It was a real joy to be in the old neighborhood again, and I was delighted to see that some things in that neighborhood never change (Carmine's, Mary Ann's, Zabar's, Citarella, La Caridad and City Diner were all just as I remembered them). Even the Food Emporiums were just where I left them! :) So, Dave got to experience a NY "supermarket" before we went back to the apartment for the night (we ate dinner at City Diner by the way, and it was as delish as ever).

Saturday was another day of fun, and mass at the beautiful St. Vincent Ferrer parish on E 65th and Lex. What a stunning place, and WHAT a homily the priest gave!

By the time departure time rolled around on Sunday, we were ready to sleep. And I did. On the train, and when I got home.

I still need about two or three LONG naps for my recovery to be complete.

Dave, jet (or, shall we say, highway and traintrack) setter as he is, is off to Ocean City this weekend with his dad.

I have adult faith formation stuff on Saturday and then NOTHING BUT REST on Sunday.

Thanks be to God.

Dani
